A key goal of The British Friends of Harvard Business School is to encourage and support a diverse pool of students from across the UK to attend Harvard Business School.
The British Friends offers awards up to $125,000 (in total, not per annum), depending on financial need, towards tuition & living costs at Harvard Business School, and may supplement HBS financial aid.
Candidates for joint degrees with the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Engineering School, Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and any other joint MBA degree program may also be considered for British Friends scholarships.
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Citizenship
- UK citizen, or Irish citizen normally resident in Northern Ireland.
- Or dual UK nationality.
Admission to HBS
- Candidates must apply to and secure admission to Harvard Business School, directly and independently before commencing a scholarship application.
- Candidates already studying at HBS are not eligible.
- Candidates on the 2+2 program are eligible for consideration once their MBA studies have been confirmed.
Selection Criteria:
Financial Need:
- BFHBS awards scholarships on the basis of financial need. A financial declaration form must be completed as part of the application package and supporting documentation to verify income must be provided.
Leadership & Understanding:
- Demonstrable leadership qualities and ambassadorial skills with evidence of cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn more about the USA and share with US citizens aspects of British culture
- Experience and interest in a range of extracurricular and community activities
- A desire to give back to BFHBS and to UK after graduation
The British Friends of Harvard Business School in particular encourage applications from those from non-traditional career backgrounds (either careers before HBS or post HBS career ambitions), from a variety of universities, and those with financial need. Former BFHBS scholars include civil servants, NHS doctors, international development professionals; firsts in their family to go to university; and state school or bursary aided pupils.
Successful candidates will be asked to give a ‘moral’ undertaking that once their own net worth is sufficiently large they will in due course make a donation to the BFHBS to fund more scholarships.
APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION/ INFORMATION:
• A completed application package (including responses to two essay questions and financial declaration form)
• A copy of HBS application form. Candidates on the 2+2 program are requested to submit their original 2+2 program application and an updated CV.
• Supporting documentation to verify income
• A certified copy of a British passport
Applications for 2025-26 academic year will open in January 2025. The deadline for the BFHBS scholarship application submission is typically in April, after HBS admission decisions are made. The BFHBS applicants are invited to an interview as part of the selection process and the scholarship decisions are made/communicated by early June.

Candidates for joint degrees with the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School and any other joint MBA degree program may also be considered for British Friends scholarships.
